Mango Selection Tips from Dr. Campbell

When selecting fruit that you want to enjoy sooner rather than later, I recommend that you buy fruit that yields slightly to the touch, has a pleasant aroma, and a deep-yellow color.

If you don’t plan to eat the mangos for a few days, select firmer fruit with a greenish hue.  As the mangos mature, they will change from green to a beautiful orange-yellow color.

In the Spotlight:  Dr. Richard Campbell

Dr. Campbell has dedicated over twenty years to the research of various cultivars. He works as Senior Curator of Genetic Resources of Tropical Fruit for the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, Florida. He has a Ph.D. in Horticulture from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and is a devoted researcher, author and advocate for tropical fruits and plant conservation worldwide.

As part of the Champagne® mango team, Dr. Campbell is responsible for providing guidance and support to the various growers and agronomists working in our mango orchards. His vast experience and knowledge of mango cultivars is an extraordinary asset to our team, in both production and quality control.

When asked how he became so involved with mangos, Dr. Campbell stated that it was a passion shared with his father, Dr. Carl W. Campbell.  Father and son had the privilege of working alongside one another at the Fairchild Tropical Garden for 15 years.

Dr. Campbell adds that when it comes to fruit, nothing compares to the Champagne® mango. The fruit is a beautiful orange-yellow; it is extremely sweet when ripe and has a wonderful shelf life.  “There is a reason mangos are known around the world as the king of fruit: they offer consumers the widest range of flavors and experiences,” says Campbell.
